Lewisham Ambulatory Care Centre
The ambulatory care centre treats adult patients with medical conditions who need same-day emergency treatment that doesn’t require an overnight stay.
Patients are referred by their GP or from other parts of the hospital. Referring patients to the ambulatory care centre means they don’t have to spend hours waiting in A&E and they get the treatment they need sooner.
This reduces pressure on the hospital’s emergency department and avoids unnecessary hospital admissions.
The centre carries out scheduled tests such as x-ray and ultrasound, with results reviewed the same day by specialist consultants. Treatments and procedures such as blood transfusions and injections for severe pain are also available.
Staffed by consultants, nurses, doctors and healthcare assistants, the centre has several consulting rooms, trolley bays and bays with recliner chairs.
The Design Collective were appointed to review the current system for heating within the unit. The existing heating had been extended from an old plant room and in some areas was struggling to maintain a comfortable temperature within the Centre considering the differing treatments that occur.
To give ultimate flexibility TDC design a VRF heat pump system to provide additional heating during the winter months whilst maintaining the existing LTHW heating circuit. The addition of the heat pump system, also now provides the centre with the benefit of cooling during the summer.
The project works were fulfilled within a 3 week period working around the continual operation of the centre that had to remain open during the course of the works.
